Our experienced debt advisers received reviews in the run-up to Talk Money Week 2024 which perfectly described many of the feelings that individuals have when they’re looking for help with their unaffordable debt… Matthew McNally was our adviser from the very start and he guided us through one of the toughest periods of our lives and put our minds at ease from the beginning. Our financial situation arose due to one of our children being diagnosed with cancer and my wife and I having to stay off work to care for her. Matthew was extremely understanding and promised to find a solution for us, which he did. As a result he was able to relieve one of our worries and stresses and put us in a much better financial position where we could focus entirely on the care for our daughter going forward.” – Paul Jacqui was really incredible. It’s really nerve wrecking to make that call, there’s lots of questions to answer and it can feel really embarrassing and overwhelming. Jacqui was super patient, really helpful and helped put my mind at ease. I didn’t feel judged, I felt really supported and comfortable through the whole process. Now a huge weight is off my shoulders and things feel a bit more normal again.” – Heather “Debt adviser Jason made my entire time better than I could of imagined. He’s not only professional and good at his job, he went and above beyond for me with nice thoughtful words and positivity towards my unfortunate life situations.” – Dale “I was a bit scared and embarrassed to call but once I made the call Michael reassured me straight away, I felt that Michael went above and beyond and helped me through everything, 100% tremendously made me feel better in myself as well.” – Derek “The help and advice I received from Anisah was absolutely outstanding. I cannot thank her enough for helping me manage my debts that I didn’t think I would or could ever get out off. As you can imagine, it feels like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can breathe again.” – Lee-Anne

Customer Podcast – Debt Help Journey

Trust Deed Scotland® and Blethered with Sean McDonald recently spoke to one of our previous customers, Becky about her experience with unaffordable debt. This inspiring episode is an important one for Trust Deed Scotland®, we often speak about the importance of our TrustPilot reviews in showing people across Scotland that debt happens, and there is help available. However, this informal chat with Becky dives even deeper and illustrates how easy it can be to have debt.

Becky’s Debt Help Journey

Becky found herself struggling with unaffordable and made a call to Trust Deed Scotland® in search of debt help. After speaking to one of the Trust Deed Scotland®  experienced debt advisers, Becky chose to enter into a Trust Deed to help with her debt. She has since completed her chosen debt solution and recently shared the exciting news with us that she is now a homeowner. Her story can help to inspire many more people across Scotland, listen here. “I first got into debt when I was about 18, I’m 45 now. At 18, I moved out of home and the bank said you can get a loan, you can get a credit card. At 18 years old, I thought “free money”. I kind of kept on top of it and then as things do… you work part time and you are trying to do everything and things kind of get on top of you. So I kept going with that and moved up here when I was 20, basically just trying to live, day to day stuff. I didn’t buy anything extravagant, we didn’t go on holidays, it was really just day to day things and over the years the debt built up. Then me and my ex boyfriend split up and for the first time, I was doing everything on my own. I was on one wage and my dad always said to me “Always make sure you pay your rent, that’s the first thing you pay, anything else you can deal with after that” so I always make sure I paid that. That was the one thing I never had any issue with. But as time went on, again just trying to survive, the bills piled up. Electric was more because it was me on my own with one wage, gas was more. So between council tax and credit cards, things just got on top of me over the years. I was meeting all the payments but behind in other things.” “The gas and electric, they went on to prepayment meters to get the debt back off me and that went on for a few years. I think it was 2015 or 2016, my cat needed a big operation and I didn’t have any money for it. I put my private plate up for sale online and my friends, one of whom is here today, they didn’t tell me but they paid the bill for me. It was at that point that I just saw that I can’t keep going like this, I can’t. If I can’t afford to look after the animal I’ve got, something’s very very wrong.” “I also got a letter from one of the credit card companies that told me if I kept paying it off at the rate I was paying it off, it would be 2038 before I cleared the debt. I’d seen the adverts and that kind of thing but you know what it’s like. You put it off and put it off because you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t want to admit it and anyway, I got in touch [with Trust Deed Scotland®] and even from that first phone call it was just like something lifted.” “I don’t think I’d actually said to my friends the kind of mess I was in but they would say “do you want to go out somewhere” and I’d be like “oh no, I can’t do that this week” and I’d make an excuse. Even going down to visit family, I couldn’t afford to do that because travelling down there was so expensive so I put that off as well and it’s just those things and literally all you are trying to do is survive.” “I looked into it myself but I didn’t realise there were other options. Bankruptcy and Trust Deed’s were the only two that I knew about but when they [Trust Deed Scotland®] went through all the options, the Trust Deed seemed to be the best option for my circumstance at that time…” Listen to the full episode here.

Debt Awareness Week 2025

Starting on 24th March, Debt Awareness Week 2025 is here. Organised by StepChange, this annual event aims to increase awareness of debt and the available solutions for people who are in need of debt advice in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Now in the 11th year of Debt Awareness Week, the focus for 2025 is exploring the judgement and stigma that can sometimes come with debt, with the aim of challenging attitudes and helping people access the support they need. Stepchange research for Debt Awareness Week focusing on the stigma around debt, found that based on a survey of 2,000 people…
  • 78% of people felt judged for being in debt
  • 90% felt a sense of personal shame about their debt
  • 40% would not talk to family or friends about their debt
  • Men are more likely to talk about debt than women
There remains a stigma surrounding debt; we want people to understand that they are not alone in their financial worries and that there is help available. Problem debt can happen to anyone; by increasing debt awareness and opening up the conversation about personal debts, we hope that we can empower others in similar positions to ask for debt help. Here at Trust Deed Scotland®, we know that taking the first step in seeking debt help is challenging. With many of our customers saying that they were worried about taking their first step, we want to reassure others in the same position that when they do reach out, experienced debt advisers can guide them towards the best, tailored debt solution.

Asking for Debt Help

Are you putting off seeking debt help?

Although our customers struggled to cope with their unaffordable debt, many waited before reaching out to a debt adviser for help; finding it hard to take that first step. There are various reasons for delaying the search for debt help. In the same 2024 survey, we asked our customers what put them off asking for help sooner than they did:
  • 65% felt ashamed or embarrassed about their debt.
  • 52% felt they could deal with the situation themselves.
  • 16% were concerned about the impact on their credit rating.
  • 11% said that they were unaware these types of debt solutions existed.
  • Almost 10% thought they had too much debt to get help.
97% of our customers said they sought debt advice sooner than they did.

Who uses formal debt solutions to manage debt in Scotland?

We are rated No.1 in Scotland for debt advice, with over [reviews] five star reviews on TrustPilot. You can read reviews from some of our customers below… Trust Deed Scotland® is Scotland’s No.1 Debt Solutions provider, specialising in Protected Trust Deeds and the Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS)¹. “I felt ashamed and desperate when I approached Trust Deed Scotland. I felt there was no way forward for me and this was exacerbating problems with debt. Scott contacted me and from the outset was clear, supportive, non-judgmental and highly knowledgeable. He took time to get to know my position, debts and outgoings and gave me clear and insightful information on all the options available to me. I felt safe in his hands. He talked me through the pros and cons of each option. I opted to enter into a Trust Deed which will reduce my monthly payments by some 70% and write of a large portion of my debt. More than this, the interest on my debt which would have risen considerably has been stopped. The entire process took no more than 7 days from first contact to signing the Trust Deed. I cannot recommend Trust Deed Scotland highly enough. Thank you, Scott. I am forever grateful for the advice and care shown and for taking care of everything so expertly and with understanding.” – Tracey   “I was in a situation where I could not see any hope in my future financially and was severely damaging my mental health. Trust Deed Scotland has literally saved my life. Gave my wife her husband back and gave my kids a happy dad back. For that, I’m truly grateful. Please if you can relate to this, please don’t hesitate to contact them. Thank you Gemma & Jason.” – Thomas   “Found myself in a bit of a rabble with debt and contacted Trust Deed Scotland to see what I could do probably the best phone call I’ve ever made. I spoke to Barry who listened intently and then came up with a plan for me with a trust deed, he spoke me through all the options and kept me informed constantly about what was happening next. If you find yourself in a situation with unaffordable debt then you should seriously consider calling them the service I received was second to none and non-judgmental which was very helpful as if like me you feel embarrassed to talk to someone, then don’t! Just call them and get rid of a helluva lot of stress from your life..” – Paul   “I’ve spoken to a few companies who called after being turned down for a loan. I never believed the information they were telling me. pushing me for Sequestration. I had to Google that one. I came across a Trust Deed Scotland video on Facebook and it finally hit home. Maybe there was a way out of debt. I watched the video over and over listening to every word of the Podcast, so much better than reading all these terms I’d never heard of. Well done Tommy. I reached out and within hours got a call. That changed everything.i didn’t even know my debt level or who I owed money to. Tommy listened and explained all my options and with his experience I was able to decide on the correct path. A trust deed wasn’t for me. I had a lot of guilt about not paying back what I had spent. I would also add, I had nothing to show for the credit I’ve used. I went for the Debt Arrangement Scheme which allows me to pay everything off but over a longer period. The plan is now set up and sent out to creditors. Without Trust Deed Scotland and Tommy explaining everything, I don’t know what I’d do. I now have a detailed plan, 1 monthly payment and paying back all my debts. I’ve finally reached out to family and stopped hiding away from everything…” – Roy If you’re a bit unsure of how it all works, you can listen to the Trust Deed Scotland Customer Podcast like Roy did, as a first step.

They communicated with me regularly, with all information being transparent and easy to understand. They were also non-judgemental and compassionate about my personal circumstances. Whenever I had questions or concerns, their expertise and support gave me the reassurance and confidence I needed to know I was making the right decision, which made the process much easier. I would highly recommend Trust Deed Scotland and Harper McDermott for the excellent customer service I received from all advisors, and for their person-centred, solution-focused approach.   Jean wrote of her experience with us, “I was so nervous before calling them. However, I did not need to worry. Shaun was so understanding and sympathetic to my circumstances. He was extremely professional, knowledgeable and explained everything so that I could easily understand my options. I am so glad I phoned them. I’m not so worried about my financial situation and can see light at the end of the tunnel.”

World Mental Health Day 2025

The 10th of October marks the annual return of World Mental Health Day. The World Mental Health 2025 theme is about doomscrolling and  ‘access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies‘. The theme highlights the importance of people being able to protect their mental health in times of global instability. Doomscrolling refers to the habit of continuously consuming negative news or distressing online content, often through social media or news apps. While staying informed is important, constant exposure to alarming headlines can heighten anxiety, stress, and feelings of hopelessness. Recognising this behaviour and setting healthy boundaries around media use can make a big difference to our overall wellbeing. The world is going through challenging times, but many of us are also carrying deep personal pressures in addition to global uncertainty.

Doomscrolling and the debt cycle

Many people turn to social media as a distraction from financial stress, endlessly scrolling to take their mind off money worries. Typically, this “doomscrolling” can deepen those worries. Social media algorithms tend to surface content based on what we already engage with. So, if you’re anxious about debt, you’re more likely to see posts about financial struggles, cost-of-living, or budgeting challenges. Instead of relief, this can amplify guilt, anxiety, and hopelessness, feeding a vicious cycle harder to escape. The real relief comes not from distraction, but from taking real action. Even small steps can help you regain control of your mental wellbeing. Debt does not define you; choosing support does.

How does financial difficulty affect Mental Health?

A common cause for mental health struggles is financial difficulty. Struggling to afford the essentials and to stay afloat financially is often linked to heightened levels of stress and anxiety. As financial difficulty escalates, unaffordable debt can build up. Here at Trust Deed Scotland®, we hear from people across Scotland who are struggling to keep up with repayments to their debts. It is common for the people that speak to us to link mental health struggles to their debt; often discussing a lack of sleep caused by worrying about their financial future and experiencing stress caused by their debt. In our most recent survey, we found that:¹
  • Over 91% of Trust Deed Scotland® customers told us that they lost sleep worrying about their debt.
  • 91% of our customers told us that debt had an impact on their mental health before entering into a debt solution, with many specifically affected by stress and anxiety.
  • Many of our customers said that they have stress or anxiety.

Let’s talk about it

While conversations around mental health have become more common, stigma still exists, and it often extends to discussions about debt. In fact, 50% of our customers told us they waited a year or more before seeking debt advice because they felt ashamed, embarrassed, or feared being judged for their financial situation.¹ As difficult as it may feel, it’s important not to be too hard on yourself over debt. Many people across Scotland experience financial difficulties, and feelings of shame or embarrassment can take a toll on your mental wellbeing, often making the situation even harder to manage. The best way forward is to speak with an experienced debt adviser who can help you find the right solution for your circumstances. Taking that first step with Trust Deed Scotland® has already helped over [volume] people in Scotland achieve a fresh financial start. Last year, the theme put forward by the World Federation of Mental Health was to raise awareness about mental health in the workplace, a reminder that open, honest conversations are the key to breaking stigma and improving wellbeing, both at work and at home.

What our customers say

Heading over to our TrustPilot page, containing thousands of Trust Deed Scotland reviews, our customers say things like… “I phoned Trust Deed Scotland after struggling to manage the mountain of debt I’d got myself into. My adviser was Matthew, and I honestly can’t recommend him enough,he was absolutely fantastic. Everything was clearly explained to me: all my options, the pros and cons of each, and the process involved with the option I chose. I was kept fully updated throughout, which really helped put me at ease as I was very anxious about entering into a Trust Deed. I genuinely can’t recommend Trust Deed Scotland highly enough as they’ve taken so much worry and stress out of my life and changed it for the better. My only regret is not contacting them sooner. – Caitlin
“The hardest part was picking up the phone, but once I did, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My debt was getting worse and worse, and so was my anxiety. After I spoke to Barry for the first time, he put me at ease, and the process after that was great. I gave him the information he needed, and within a couple of weeks, he had everything set up for a payment plan I can actually afford.” – Steven
“I filled in an online form and was contacted by Sharon. I wanted some advice, and we explored the different options before deciding that a Trust Deed suited me best. I was still unsure about going ahead and voiced my concerns, but Sharon explained everything in detail, including the benefits and helped me realise it was the best way to get a fresh start. Now I only have one payment a month and no stress attached to it.” – Michael

We’re always keen to take action on any feedback that we receive to make improvements to our processes wherever we can and continuously improve our own learning and development as a leading Scottish debt solutions provider.

Cost of Living Crisis: More Scots Forced to Cut Back in 2025

More Scots Feeling the Squeeze as Cost of Living Pressures Bite – Which? Report. Households across Scotland are continuing to feel the strain of rising prices. According to new research from Which?, more than half of UK households have had to make at least one financial adjustment in recent weeks just to keep up with everyday essentials. This is the highest level seen so far this year. The Which? survey found that 52% of people said they’d had to take action to cover daily costs such as food shopping, energy bills, rent or mortgage payments, school items or prescriptions. If those numbers were applied across the UK, it would mean around 14.8 million households have made changes to cope with rising costs, the highest level since December 2024. The survey of more than 2,100 people across the UK was carried out between 17 and 19 October. People said they had been cutting back on essentials, dipping into savings, selling belongings, or borrowing money to get by. Those on lower incomes were particularly likely to say they’d had to go without.

Cost of Living in Scotland

Here in Scotland, our own 2024 Trust Deed Scotland® Customer Survey found similar patterns. When asked what actions they had taken to combat the cost of living crisis:
  • 66% said they had cut back on socialising or hobbies
  • 31% said they had cut back on heating
  • 34% said they had cut back on buying food
  • 20% said they had borrowed money from family or friends
We also asked those struggling with problem debt about the impact of interest and charges being added to what they owed. Over 93% told us it made their situation worse. And 62% said they had taken on longer hours or even extra jobs just to make payments. The Scottish government released a report in February 2025, amongst its findings, it reported rising levels of food insecurity. Food insecurity is the lack of reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious, and safe food. It can range from reducing the variety of diets to members sometimes disrupting eating patterns or going without food due to a lack of resources. The Which? report found that the number of households missing at least one essential payment, such as rent, mortgage, utilities or loan repayments, was 5.5% in October. Applying the same percentage to Scotland’s population suggests that around 140,000 Scottish households may have missed at least one essential payment during that period. This is only an estimate, as both the Which? survey and the National Records of Scotland household data are based on sample and census estimates rather than exact numbers. Which? warned that more households are still making financial sacrifices just to stay afloat as we head into the colder months and the expensive festive period. Looking ahead, one in five (20%) people believe their financial situation will improve over the next year, while about a third (34%) expect things to get worse. Those who expect things to deteriorate cited the rising cost of food, energy bills and inflation as key concerns. Some also mentioned worries about possible tax rises and government policies.

Black Friday Debt 2025

It’s BFCM week, better known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s a marketing onslaught that can be hard to resist. Our email inboxes are already filling up with promotions of all kinds, from electronics to apparel and fashion brands. Most retail websites we visit are offering generous voucher codes. We can’t browse our socials without finding clickbaitesque deals. We can’t read a newspaper, watch TV, or even listen to the radio without being offered even more discounts. It’s easy to get caught up in the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and end up spending more than we should. However, you should avoid spending money that you don’t have. Almost four in ten shoppers admit to Black Friday regret after splurging on impulse buys, according to new research by Tesco Mobile. Just over a quarter of the 2,000 respondents admitted to buying items they have never used. PriceWaterCooper, a global consulting, audit and tax firm, predicts that Total UK Black Friday spending is predicted to be £6.4bn in 2025, a 1.5% increase from 2024. The average spend per person is expected to be £262, up 13% from last year. Men are forecast to spend 43% more than women.

Resisting the pull of Black Friday and how it can affect mental health

Black Friday is designed to create urgency. Limited stock messages, countdown clocks and bold discount claims encourage quick decisions. When we feel we are running out of time, we are more likely to buy something without thinking it through. Studies also show that the pressure to buy can impact mental wellbeing. Constant advertising can create a fear of missing out (FOMO), which pushes some people to spend in order to feel better in the short term. Compulsive Buying Disorder also known as shopping addiction or oniomania, is a harmful behavioural condition and is estimated to affect around 300,000 people in Scotland. Psychotherapists writing in the Comprehensive Psychiatry journal have argued that addiction to online shopping should be formally recognised as an official mental-health disorder. Researchers say the condition presents consistent symptoms and characteristics, and that it can significantly affect emotions, thinking patterns, and daily life. Although “buying-shopping disorder” (BSD) has been recognised for decades, experts warn that it has taken on a new intensity in the internet age. Constant access to online stores, targeted advertising, flash sales and one-click purchasing can make urges stronger and harder to control. The Priory Group notes that when individuals overcome one addiction, such as alcoholism, other compulsive behaviours can sometimes emerge, including shopping. These behaviours often worsen in the run-up to the festivities, throughout Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and again during the January sales. Speaking about shopping addiction, they explained: “All rationale and reason around overspending are overlooked for the short-term gain, ignoring the longer-term consequences.” Some temporary coping and recovery strategies include:
  • Seeking support from people who understand the urges (other recovering shopping addicts, therapists, trusted friends)
  • Removing shopping apps from your phone
  • Unsubscribing from email and SMS marketing
  • Discarding promotional leaflets that arrive through the letterbox
  • Avoiding websites that you know will push Black Friday or sales content
  • Planning other activities before, during and after Black Friday
  • Avoiding social media entirely, or at least muting or unfollowing retail brands
If you are concerned about your mental wellbeing, our Support Services Hub provides further guidance and lists organisations such as SAMH and Breathing Space, two excellent Scottish organisations specialising in mental health support.

Black Friday and Buy Now, Pay Later: A toxic combination

As retailers compete aggressively for your attention, the tactics used to drive spending often become more intense, especially during Black Friday. Time-limited offers, countdown timers, and personalised ads create a sense of urgency that can lead people to spend more than they intended. At the same time, the rapid expansion of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options across almost every major e-commerce website has added another layer of risk. BNPL is often promoted as a simple, interest-free way to spread payments, but the reality can be very different. The risks of BNPL during Black Friday BNPL can quickly become a problem because of: Deferred payments that seem manageable in November but pile up in December and January Late fees or additional charges if just one instalment is missed Debt stacking, where multiple BNPL plans run simultaneously across different providers Reduced visibility of your total borrowing — BNPL payments are easy to forget, and not all appear clearly on bank statements Encouragement to spend more, as BNPL increases average order values and lowers the psychological barrier to checkout During heavy sales periods, these risks increase dramatically because people make multiple purchases in a short space of time.

BNPL regulation in 2025

As of 2025, the UK has continued moving towards greater regulation of BNPL products, with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) urging firms to treat customers fairly and provide clearer information. However, full regulation of all BNPL providers is not yet complete, meaning many shoppers still face:
  • Inconsistent affordability checks
  • Limited transparency around late fees
  • Varying levels of consumer protection depending on the provider
This creates a grey area where vulnerable consumers, especially those already worried about money, remain at risk of harm. The FCA have said that in 2026, thanks to the UK government’s intervention, it will start regulating Buy Now Pay Later, using its more formal name – Deferred Payment Credit (DPC). A real-world example of why BNPL needs tighter regulation: A typical situation we hear from customers goes like this: “I bought a few things over Black Friday. £30 here, £60 there. Each one felt affordable, and BNPL let me spread the payments. But by January I had six different instalment plans due at once, all small amounts individually, but together it was too much.” This pattern is extremely common and can push people into overdrafts, credit cards, or further borrowing to cover BNPL instalments. The bottom line BNPL is not inherently bad, but during Black Friday, when spending pressure is at its peak, it can become a toxic combination. Without careful budgeting, BNPL can turn short-term convenience into long-term financial stress.

Black Friday: Why the Deals Often Aren’t Real Deals

Black Friday has a reputation for huge savings, but the evidence shows otherwise. Recent research from Which? (2024) analysed 175 products across major UK retailers including Amazon, Currys and Argos. Their findings were clear: 0% of the products were at their cheapest price on Black Friday 100% were cheaper or the same price at other points during the year. During the broader Black Friday period (15 Nov–12 Dec), 83% were cheaper or equal in price at another time, and 42% had been cheaper at least once in the previous six months Coverage in the UK press, including The Guardian, highlighted that not a single tracked item hit its lowest price on Black Friday, undermining the belief that it’s the best time to buy big-ticket items. In other words: the ‘limited-time deal’ you’re rushing to buy may not be a deal at all. Some retailers also take advantage of the Black Friday hype by promoting discounts that look substantial, but still don’t offer the best value. This becomes even more risky when buying expensive items, especially if it means dipping into an overdraft, using a credit card, or relying on Buy Now, Pay Later to “grab a bargain”. A simple tactic to avoid impulse purchases If you see something you think you must buy, add it to your basket — then step away and revisit it later. Ask yourself:
  • Do I still want this?
  • Can I actually afford it today, without borrowing?
If you hesitate on either point, it may have been an impulse decision triggered by the sales environment.

Why waiting can save you money

Most online retailers use cart abandonment strategies. About 41% of shoppers abandon their baskets and retailers know this. As a result, waiting can lead to:
  • additional discount codes
  • free-delivery offers
  • price-drop notifications
Or, you may simply realise you didn’t really need the item after all.

Christmas debt

Regardless of how you feel about Christmas, don’t let money and debt cause you stress. Christmas debt can be really damaging…
  1. It adds stress in the back of your mind & stops you from enjoying time with your family.
  2. You start the new year on the wrong foot, New Year’s resolutions are trumped by Christmas debt.
  3. It cost you money. Buy now pay later, credit cards and store cards are expensive forms of borrowed debt.
To avoid going into debt this Christmas, we recommend making a Christmas budget and sticking to it. Don’t feel pressured to spend more than you can afford. You don’t want to start 2026 with Christmas debt hanging over your head.
